Thanks for the encouragement to look again. Immediately after Wimbledon
I found out: For some reason the Metacard files were write-protected on
my computer.

And, interestingly, one attempt to save the Metacard Menu Bar (with
write protection on) indeed produced a saved  file, but without the
extension.

Everything works fine here. Long live Metacard and its flexibility to
even customize its environment.
