Alternate Remote Server Protocols

Greetings,

One of the most useful aspects of modern scripting is the ability to store
and fetch files from remote, unmounted disks.  The technique I usually use
is:

get url "ftp://userName:userPassword@siteName.com/folder1/folder2/myFile"

What other protocals exist for storing and fetching files from unmounted
disks, using the internet, wide area networks, intranet, etc.?  My goal here
is to accommodate public school systems which often block ftp use.
