System Background Pattern?

Has anyone figured out how to get the system background pattern to 
display in a toplevel stack?  I followed Scott Raney's instructions to 
set the backPixmap and backColor of the current card and stack to empty, 
but the card/stack still shows up white.

It seems this should be possible since the Control Browser window 
appears with the correct pattern, but cloning this stack results in a 
stack with a white background...
